Origin Of Assam Tea

Assam tea was discovered by a Scottish adventurer, Robert Bruce, who noticed tea-like plants growing wild near Rangpur. This was in 1823 and Bruce was on a trading mission. He was reportedly directed by Maniram Dewan to Bessa Gam who was the local Singpho chief. Bessa Gam showed Bruce how local tribesmen (known as the Singhpos) brewed tea from the leaves of this bush. Bruce arranged with the tribal chief to give him samples of these tea leaves with seeds, as he planned on having them scientifically examined. Robert Bruce passed away a few years later, never having seen this plant being properly classified.

In early 1830, Robert Bruce’s brother, Charles, sent a few of these leaves to a botanical garden in Calcutta to be properly examined and it was then that this plant was officially classified as a tea variety and named Camellia Sinensis var. Assamica.

Steeping

Organic Assam tea is very easy to steep, even if it is your first time. Just follow these simple steps:

  • Boil fresh, filtered water (200° F / 93° C)
  • Add 2 grams of tea to an infuser, per 8 oz. water
  • Pour the heated water into the mug
  • Steep for 3-5 minutes
  • Strain tea leaves, or take out the infuser
  • Sip and enjoy your organic tea!
  • Assam tea is hearty, and can sustain up to 3 steepings, so you can enjoy one serving multiple times

Health Benefits Of Organic Assam Tea

Research suggests that Assam tea may promote health in several ways.

Mental Alertness

The caffeine content of Assam tea affects thinking and alertness. Assam tea helps you stay awake even if you are experiencing an extended period without sleep. The caffeine, however, can cause side effects if consumed in large quantities, warns MedlinePlus. Avoid adverse effects of caffeine, such as headaches, nervousness, irregular heartbeat, heartburn, and irritability, by drinking fewer than five cups per day.

Cancer Prevention

The phenolic compounds in Assam tea have antioxidant properties and function to reduce the damage of reactive oxygen and nitrogen on your cells. This means Assam tea may be responsible for reducing the risk of cancer. Black tea is possibly effective for lowering the risk of ovarian cancer. Preliminary evidence suggests that men who consume more phytoestrogens, which are found in black tea, have a lower risk of getting lung cancer.

Cardiovascular Health

The flavonoids in tea improve endothelial function – the function of the lining inside the blood vessels, cardiac valves, and other areas. Flavonoids from either green or black tea prevent the build-up of plaque inside the arteries. Thus, tea is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Some evidence suggests that drinking black tea is also associated with a lower risk of a heart attack.

Decreased Risk of Parkinson’s Disease

Drinking Assam tea – or any beverage with caffeine – may decrease your risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. For men, consuming 124 to 208 milligrams of caffeine per day — about two to four cups of Assam tea — significantly may reduce the risk of Parkinson’s, while higher consumption provides a greater reduction of risk. For women, one to four cups of tea seem to provide the greatest risk reduction.
